The book, Vulnerable: The Law, Policy & Ethics of COVID-19, examines the impact of the pandemic on federalism, social responsibility, civil liberties, equity, work and health. It includes 43 chapters with 69 contributing authors and covers topics such as ageism, mental health, pandemic management, contact tracing applications and international relations, among others.

The Interdisciplinary Work Research Team “Health, Gender, Equality” (SAGE) headed by Jessica Riel, professor in the Department of Industrial Relations (UQO), has been awarded a team support grant (renewal) from the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture of $389,105 over 4 years. The scientific programming of the SAGE team focuses on occupational health through a gender analysis. This important grant will support the development of the team's projects and consolidate the links that several members already have with social partners (unions, public organizations, businesses, organizations and social groups defending workers’ rights in vulnerable situations).

The innovative nature of the SAGE team is based on an ecosystemic approach to occupational health that integrates gender and its interconnection with other social relationships and takes into account the economic, social, political and legal context of society, the organizational dimensions of the workplace, as well as the practices and relational dynamics of individuals in relation to their psychological and discursive processes. In addition, its research program is part of a knowledge co-construction approach that consists of conducting action-oriented research projects in close collaboration with the practice environment.

L’équipe SAGE se distingue par sa composition qui, en plus d’être interdisciplinaire (ergonomie, droit, psychologie, économie, communication, épidémiologie et relations industrielles) et interuniversitaire (UQO, UQAM, Université Laval, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke, Université d’Ottawa et TELUQ), comprend des expertises complémentaires de chercheuses en début de carrière et de chercheuses séniors de renommée internationale.

The SAGE team stands out for its interdisciplinary (ergonomics, law, psychology, economics, communication, epidemiology and industrial relations) and inter-university (UQO, UQAM, Université Laval, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke, University of Ottawa and TELUQ) membership, which includes the complementary expertise of early-career and internationally-recognized senior researchers.

The 16 members of the SAGE team are: Jessica Riel (UQO), Rachel Cox (UQAM), Geneviève Baril-Gingras (Université Laval), Stéphanie Bernstein (UQAM), Dalia Gesualdi-Fecteau (UQAM), Anne-Renée Gravel (TELUQ), Marie Laberge (Université de Montréal), Valérie Lederer (UQO), Mélanie Lefrançois (UQAM), Marie-Ève Major (Université de Sherbrooke), Karen Messing (UQAM), Johanne Saint-Charles (UQAM), Hélène Sultan-Taïeb (ESG-UQAM) and Nicole Vézina (UQAM), as well as collaborators Katherine Lippel (University of Ottawa) and Nathalie Houlfort (UQAM).

Professor Rachel Cox, a member of the SAGE team, co-authored this research report about the recognition of the employer's explicit obligation regarding intimate partner violence in Quebec, as part of the Service aux collectivités de l'UQAM. The report presents the results of research conducted at the request of a coalition of groups from Côte-Nord in Quebec, namely the Centre d'aide aux victimes d'actes criminels (CAVAC)-Côte-Nord, the Centre Femmes aux 4 Vents, the Maison des Femmes de Baie-Comeau and the Maison l'Amie D'Elle.
